Turrican 2 in HD remake

Cypherian

Wouldn't that be awesome?
Robert

Probably not.

Why not?

I know for a fact a lot of other people on these forums
love this game as much as I do.

For me, as long as they keep the core gameplay intact but improve on it, the chances are good that it will be even more fun than the original.

I wouldn't mind to see a beefed up 2D HD graphics, arranged soundtracks by Chris Hülsbeck (or better yet, using the original Turrican CD soundtracks), in-game achievements, online leader boards, and a few unreleased levels. It would be instant classic to the second degree!

The problem comes if Factor 5 or anyone else wants to do a HD remake of their own

The graphics are fine as they are, there is no need for HD gfx at all.
Brent

I agree with Robert. IMO a lot of the magic derives from the low res graphics.

I also don't think that any possible successor to Turrican 2 will ever come close. This was a one-time thing in which just everything came together.

But now I'm gonna unpack my BRAND-NEW Amiga 1200 and play some Turrican 2

I believe you guys misunderstand me.

It's not that the game doesn't need an aesthtetic makeover to get me to play it again. I'm content to play the original games as they are. I seriously doubt they'll make any possible improvements to the original. I get your point.

But like I said before, I wouldn't mind to see a beefed up version of Turrican 2. This was not a request, what follows is just my personal expectations. Try to understand the difference.

Anyway, be as critical or controversial as you like, you're welcome to post any personal ideas for any new features in Turrican 2 HD remake.

Sorry I probably didn't explain myself properly.

I'm pretty sure Factor 5 will come up with an HD Turrican game in the not so distant future. But I'm not really expecting it to be great. However, I will be very pleased, if they prove me wrong.

I don't think we misunderstood you. You gave your opinion. We gave ours. Simple as that

I think, Rekli, that you'd like a Turrican for the Xbox Live Arcade right ? Well, maybe Turrican 2 PC version with an upscaling filter (like Castlevania Symphony of The Night), to be able to play it on a 1920x1080 screen.

But the fact is Factor don't want to work on Xbox 360 (they said before that the Wii was a stupid thing, then that they were furious that no devs could make beautiful games like Rogue Squadron 2 & 3, then they want to work on it...).

Like Brent, I'm pretty sure that we'll see another Turrican sooner or later, maybe on PsP or DS (or both ?), or on Wii Ware and PlayStation Network. If PSN, it will be in HD anyway.

I'd like a modern Turrican with modern GFX (but not modern musics), with gigantic levels like Turrican 2, BUT with the nervous action of Turrican 3 and Super Turrican 2...

Eggebrecht hinted that they are working on a franchise restart like Metroid Prime. So I guess Turrican is finally going 3D. It COULD be huge, if it was properly done. I bet that there will also be a 2D sequel aimed at PSN or WiiWare probably. We must not forget that Turrican is Factor 5's biggest franchise up there with Rogue Squadron after all. They will definitely continue it.

For me, however, the most important question concerning such as sequel is: will Hülsbeck see a return to his former greatness? I really hope so. Turrican draws a lot of its unique atmosphere from its music. To me, Super Turrican 2 was going in the wrong direction in almost every respect - not only musically.

I hear you Cypherian. I too have wanted a "remake" of Turrican 2 on Xbox Live Arcade for the longest time now. I don't own an Amiga, and I can't find any adf. files of T2 that work fully, so I have every excuse to demand a console port. They did it with Speed Ball 2 on XBL, another Amiga game I like, so why not Turrican 2?

They could have a mode with upscaled HD quality and enhanced graphics, and a low res mode to keep fans of the original just as pleased. Achievements, leaderboards, etc would all just be icing on the cake, but would add replayability to the game. I don't care whether it's WiiWare or XBL (XBL would be preferred since more could be done), but please don't just release it on PSN because I don't plan on buying a PS3 anytime soon.

A 2D Turrican DS game would also be just as awesome.

@Brent :
I still remember the ending theme of Super Turrican 2 : Farewell. It was an awesome song, and the only way to hear it is to finish the game on Normal or Hard setting (Easy mode don't allow you to end the final battle and the game ends with the escape of Morgul).

Super Turrican 2 was modern, with modern GFX, modern Gameplay, modern music and stuff, and I still love it. But it's true that they could make real BIG levels.

THE BOARD IS ALIVE!!!

"Farewell" was a good song, but it doesn't compare to the class of "Freedom" imo. To me, Turrican 3 featured the last consistently great soundtrack from Chris Hülsbeck. But I'm not giving up on him. He's a genius.

BYYYYY THE WAAAAY: The Symphonic Shades concert will finally be released on CD!

For those of you who didn't attend the concert: MUST-GET!!! Everyone else: SAME.

Nobody attended the concert yet - it's next month.

Ahhh, can't wait for it. The short clip of the Turrican 2 Title played by the Play! orchestra on YouTube hints how big this could be...

The concert will be broadcasted on WDR, too, right? Gonna record it as well. I honestly thought that the first concert had already taken place

guys,
VERY IMPORTANT: a turri game not created by THE MASTER (MT) is NOT turri!!!

whatever eggie wants to do with the franchise, it won't be an "original" turri.
just an amount of money that will go to his bank account.
as for HD, who cares? the resolution has nothing to do with playability and gameplay!
that's just crap for media megacorps to rip you off your money.

...and huelsbeck IS A GENIUS!

if only chris and THE MASTER could someday create a game... (sigh)...

Definitely. If they decided to bring Turrican back, it would be best to get Trenz back on the project. Trenz has proven to be a fantastic game designer and Factor 5 is certainly strong on the technological side of things. Let's see if they'll act reasonably.

I tried to ask Chris Hüelsbeck about Manfred Trenz, and he answered me that he don't want to hear that name anymore. So I doubt they'll ever work together.
Brent

Wow, that's a pretty harsh answer. I wonder what happened between them.

When did he say that?
Cypherian
09.07.08
I hope you're joking Elsweyr, that dosen't sound like him at all.

And yes, a Turrican without MT and CH is not a real Turrican.

seems reasonable to me! i'm afraid you 're right on this! i believe this is also true for all of f5 crew. sad but true. pardon my naivity (mt+chris on another game).

don't forget that f5 stripped mt of his rights concerning turri.
and without hesitation "continued" with the franchise (t3, st)
also, when chris founded kaiko he made his choise: f5. a wise one.
nobody cared or bothered about the mastermind of the turri franchise.
all of them wanted to make money.
mt wanted to make money too. however, he was "pure".
don't forget that mt IS the inspiration for all turr remixes. it wasn't thq, eggie or the others.
by being an amateur he proved that "it can be done". go for it. if you have a good idea, you can do it without budgets and parasites (managers). there were others before mt that proved that, but if we talk about turri, THE MASTER IS THE ONE!

if i had to support someone it would be THE MASTER (he is a metalhead after all!)
HE IS THE GUIDE for all of us who adore the turri scene.
eggie wants mainstream fans to fill his pockets with dollars!
but, as i said before, i must acknowledge the fact that he is a genius!

if only the master gave us a sign...

i mean chris is a genius! (not eggie - eggie has become a manager!)

I promise I don't lie. Nicolas Fournel can't tell me anything, cause he wasn't part of the team when they broke, and "even if I know, I can't talk about that because I'm not working at Factor 5 anymore".

He was my last chance to know.

To recenter the subject of the topic, why not create a Turrican-like game (so no Bren Mc Guire, not Turrican Assault Suit, no Morgul) with achievements ? Like :

"Finish the first world on Maniac difficulty" : Unlocks new colors for the Assault Suit.
"Find every crystals in the game" : Unlocks artwork / conceptual galleries.
"Finish the game on Hard difficulty" : Unlocks Maniac difficulty and true ending.
"One-credit the game on Maniac difficulty" : Unlock ingame full maps to find every treasures.

That's just some examples, but could interresting and make a lot of replayability.

The game could be retro with HD effects. I would LOVE a mod for Hurrican with achievements.
